Despite its nickname, Howard Hughes' famous aircraft, the "Spruce Goose," was actually built mainly out of birch wood. The massive plane, officially known as the Hughes H-4 Hercules, was constructed during World War II using laminated birch wood due to wartime restrictions on aluminum.
Howard Hughes' vision for the Spruce Goose was to create a large transport aircraft capable of carrying troops and equipment across the Atlantic Ocean. The use of birch wood was a strategic choice that allowed the plane to be lightweight yet strong enough to support its massive size.
Although the Spruce Goose only made one brief flight in 1947, it remains a symbol of innovation and engineering prowess. Despite its unconventional materials, the aircraft showcased Hughes' determination and ingenuity in pushing the boundaries of aviation technology.
