The Tropic of Cancer
The Tropic of Cancer
The Tropic of Cancer is an imaginary line of latitude located at approximately 23.5 degrees north of the Equator. It marks the northernmost point where the sun appears directly overhead at least once a year. However, contrary to popular belief, the Tropic of Cancer does not pass through the following countries:
- United States
- Mexico
- India
- China
These countries are often mistakenly thought to be crossed by the Tropic of Cancer due to their proximity to the line of latitude. In reality, the Tropic of Cancer passes through countries such as Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and India.
It is important to note that the Tropic of Cancer is just one of the five major circles of latitude that mark the Earth's surface. The other four are the Equator, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Arctic Circle, and the Antarctic Circle.
Understanding the geography of these lines of latitude can help us better appreciate the Earth's unique climate zones and the way in which they influence our planet's weather patterns and ecosystems.
